Built in 1936, this beautiful home dates to a period when Atami was no longer just a retreat for the Meiji-era elite, but a fully established onsen resort town favored by merchants, writers, and artists.

Set in the heart of Nishiyamachō, a hillside neighborhood known for its private onsen villas and small ryokan, the home reflects the original owner’s preference for privacy and tranquility. With intricate woodwork depicting Shizuoka’s famed Mount Fuji, and gardens designed to be enjoyed across the seasons, stays are defined by conversation, contemplation, and ease.

Our loving renovation preserved the home’s stunning original details, while introducing layers of design, comfort, and functionality. The result is a space that feels neither frozen in time nor newly imposed, but thoughtfully evolved.

Opening for guest bookings in early 2026.

INQUIRE HERE

Reimagined as a home shaped by multiple eras, the interiors move from mid-century and 1970s influences into the present. Guests are invited to slow down and settle into our relaxed record lounge, three peaceful tatami bedrooms, and a generous bath finished with hinoki and Tajimi tile. The house offers bright engawa spaces on both levels, an elegant yet comfortable dining room, and a well-appointed kitchen, creating the experience of a Japanese home where traditional craftsmanship and contemporary comforts coexist.

After several years of delighting guests at our mid-century traditional Japanese home in Ito, we were inspired to bring this historic, spacious home back to life.

Just a short walk from the house is Kinomiya Shrine, one of Atami’s most revered places. Thoughtfully updated in recent years, the shrine balances tradition with modern design. Centered around a thousand-year-old camphor tree, it has long been associated with longevity, renewal, and calm—values that shape how we hope you will experience your time at The Layer | Atami Garden House.
