Travel to and From Itō

Ito Station is served by two trains: the Itō Line and the Odoriko Line.

The vast majority of our guests take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Atami Station, and then transfer to the Itō Line or the Odoriko Line (25 minutes from Atami Station, running about 3 times per hour). We find that Google Maps offers excellent directions and multiple options for getting to Ito. You can also check Navitime or Hyperdia for additional information.

From Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station to Atami Station, there are two Tokaido Shinkansen per hour (30-35 minutes).

From Shin Osaka Station and Kyoto Station, there are also typically 2 direct Shinkansen per hour that stop in Atami (2-3 hours).

All Shinkansen require a special ticket, which can be purchased at most JR stations. Both non-reserved seats and reserved seats are available (during some busy travel seasons all seats might be reserve only).

From Itō Station, it is a 5 minute taxi ride (900 yen) or a 15 minute walk to the house. For your first trip to the house, we highly recommend taking a taxi so that you don’t have to walk up the hill with your bags.

Sample trip from Tokyo:

  • Shinkansen to Atami (30 minutes, approximately 4000 yen)

  • Transfer to Ito Line to Itō Station (25 minutes, approximately 300 yen)

  • Taxi to House (5 minutes, approximately 900 yen)

  • Total travel time, including transfer and waiting time = approximately 90 minutes from Tokyo or Shinagawa Station

Note: from Tokyo Station or Shinagawa Station, the Odoriko Limited Express also makes a few trips per day direct to Itō Station (90 minutes, no transfers). All seats on Odoriko trains require an additional fare and may need to be booked in advance. Be careful that it is a regular Odoriko and not a Saphir Odoriko as those trains are typically fully booked about a month in advance.

If you choose to drive, you are welcome to park on the street in front of the house. While street parking is not technically permitted by the city, it is the countryside and street parking is widely practiced by our neighbors, us, and our guests.

Identification Requirements for Foreign Visitors to Japan

We would like to share information about identification collection for guests staying in lodging in Japan. As per Japanese law under the Private Lodging Business Act, we are required to collect identification information. This includes:

  • Every guest’s name, nationality, and passport number

  • We are also required to keep a copy of one guest's passport as a record

We will use either the secure Airbnb messaging system or a secure external form (via Cognito forms)- it is your choice which to use.

You can preview the form here. We will send out the form a few weeks before you arrive, along with the arrival information.

You can read more about identification requirements on Airbnb or the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare site or the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism site.

In brief summary: in Japan, ALL lodging (large and small hotels, inns, Airbnbs, etc) follow the same laws and permitting structure, and so every accommodation is required to collect this information (regardless of size or booking platform used). If you are not a resident of Japan, you will be asked for your passport at every accommodation.

If you are unwilling to comply with this request, we sincerely apologize that we will not be able to accept your booking. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
